Many people come to me with the same quiet question: “Who was I before this life, and why does it still affect me?” If you have ever wanted to extract information about your past lives from the Akashic Records, you are not alone. It is one of the most common reasons people open their records.
In this guide I will walk you through how I prepare, what to ask, how to notice what comes through, and how to make sense of it afterwards. My aim is simple: past-life information should help you live this life better, not keep you lost in old stories.
You can use these steps on your own, or as preparation before a reading with a trained reader.
What Are the Akashic Records?
The Akashic Records are often described as the record of every soul’s journey. Every thought, word, feeling, choice and intention you have ever had is said to be held there. I like to describe it as a library of your soul, where each lifetime is a chapter.
Your records are not only about the past. They also hold your lessons, your strengths and the patterns you came to work through in this life. That is why past-life information from the records is most useful when you connect it to what you are living today.
If you are completely new to this, my beginner’s guide to the Akashic Records explains the basics in more detail.
How to Prepare Before You Look Into Your Past Lives
Preparation makes a big difference. When your mind is busy or your question is vague, the information you receive tends to be vague too.
Set a clear intention
Before you begin, be honest about why you want to know. Are you looking for healing, for an explanation of a pattern, or for a sense of your soul’s purpose? Write your reason down in one or two lines. A clear intention keeps the session focused and stops you from drifting.
Choose a calm, quiet space
Pick a place where you will not be disturbed for at least thirty minutes. Switch off notifications. Sit comfortably with your feet on the ground. This should feel like a space where you can be still and think deeply.
Ground and settle yourself
Take a few slow breaths. Notice your body. Let the events of the day settle. Many people skip this step, but a calm, grounded body is what allows subtle information to come through clearly.
Open the records with respect
Most readers use a prayer or a set of words to open the records. If you would like a simple, structured way to do this, you can follow my step-by-step Akashic Records prayer guide.
How to Extract Information About Your Past Lives from the Akashic Records
Once the records are open, these are the steps that help you gather useful, grounded information about your past lifetimes.
Ask specific questions
Targeted questions lead to clearer answers. Instead of “Tell me about my past lives,” try questions like:
- “Which past-life experience is influencing my relationship patterns now?”
- “Is there a past life connected to my fear of speaking up?”
- “What strength did I build in a past life that I can use today?”
- “What lesson from a past life am I still completing?”
Ask one question at a time and give yourself a few moments to receive before moving on.
Pay attention to the details
Notice everything that comes through: people, places, clothing, landscapes, feelings and events. Even small details can give context. A cold stone floor, a sense of being far from home, or a strong feeling of responsibility can all be meaningful.
Use every sense
The records do not only speak in pictures. Information can arrive as a feeling in your body, a word or phrase you hear inside, a sudden knowing, or even a smell or taste. Stay open to all of these. Some people “see” very little but “know” a great deal, and that is perfectly fine.
Look for patterns, not just stories
The most valuable past-life information is usually a pattern. Look for themes that repeat: being silenced, being betrayed, carrying too much, leaving too soon. These recurring themes often point to the lessons or unresolved feelings that still affect you.
What Past-Life Information Often Looks Like in My Readings
In my readings I often see that past-life information comes in layers. First there is a feeling, then a scene, and then the link to the present becomes clear.
In my method, the left shoulder holds past-life patterns and the right shoulder holds family-line patterns. When a client carries heaviness on the left side, I often find an old lifetime pattern sitting there, such as a vow of silence, a habit of self-sacrifice, or a fear around money or safety.
What matters most is not the drama of the story. It is what the story explains. A past life where you were punished for speaking may explain why your throat tightens in meetings today. Once you understand that, you can begin to make a different choice.
How to Interpret What You Receive
After the session, give yourself time to reflect. The information often makes more sense a day or two later.
Write everything down
Journal straight after you close the records, even the parts that seem odd or small. Details fade quickly, and patterns often only appear when you read your notes later.
Join the dots
Ask yourself: where does this show up in my life now? Look for links between what you received and your current struggles, relationships, fears or talents. If there is no link at all, set it aside rather than forcing it.
Separate insight from imagination
It is normal to wonder, “Did I make that up?” A helpful test is how the information feels. True insight usually feels calm, simple and quietly obvious, and it brings relief or understanding. Imagination tends to feel exciting, dramatic or ego-boosting.
Turn insight into a small action
Every useful past-life insight should lead to something practical. That might be forgiving yourself, setting a boundary, changing a belief, or trying something you have always avoided. In my work, I often support clients with belief rewriting over 7, 14 or 21 days so the new pattern can settle in.
When to Work With a Trained Akashic Records Reader
You can explore your own records, but there are times when a trained reader helps. If the information is unclear, emotional, or keeps repeating without resolution, a reader can hold the space and help you understand it.
A reader can also help you see patterns you are too close to notice. Over the years I have worked with more than 5,000 clients from 30+ countries, and very often the most helpful part of a session is simply connecting the past-life pattern to a clear next step.
If you would like to learn to do this properly for yourself, I also teach courses in Akashic Records, Automatic Writing and Mediumship.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I access my past lives through the Akashic Records on my own?
Yes, many people can with practice, a clear intention and a respectful opening prayer. It usually takes several sessions before the information feels steady and clear.
How do I know if past-life information is real?
Look at how it feels and whether it helps. Real insight usually feels calm and simple, and it explains something in your present life in a practical way.
What questions should I ask about my past lives?
Ask questions that link to your life now, such as which past life is affecting a fear, a relationship pattern or a talent. Avoid very broad questions like “Who was I?”
Is it safe to look into past lives?
For most people it is a gentle process, especially when you go slowly and stay grounded. If something feels heavy or emotional, pause and consider working with a trained reader instead.
Will I see my past lives like a movie?
Not always. Some people see images, but many feel emotions, hear words or simply know things. All of these are valid ways of receiving.
How is a past-life reading different from a general Akashic Records reading?
A past-life reading focuses on earlier lifetimes and how they shape your current patterns. A general reading can cover any area of life, including purpose, relationships and blocks.
